I’m glad that we’re finally – FINALLY – back to regular in-season operations. The slacking-off of the summer is now officially over and football season has begun. This football season, I'm going to change up my formula in the days prior to a football game, setting you up with new information in different ways. This way, I'll be able to give you a new post on college football every single day. Today, and on Mondays to follow, you’ll get the basics and the opening line (if there is one).
So then, getting right to business, it shouldn’t surprise you that there is no Vegas line for this game. If there was, Boston College would probably be at least a 30-point favorite, but that’s a guess. It would have been about the same if BC were to play Hofstra, the team originally scheduled for this spot, but in obvious fear of their looming beatdown at Alumni Stadium*, they gave up their football program altogether.
Weber State University, in Ogden, Utah, comes to Boston College for the first game of the 2010 regular season. BCDraft interviewed their head coach, Ron McBride, here and here. The Wildcats are ranked #18 in the FCS Coaches Poll as of right now and are expected by many to contend in the Big Sky Conference this year.
Boston College, on the other hand, is expected to contend in the ACC Atlantic this year (but, if you’re going to listen only to Tom Luginbill, the ACC Preseason Poll, and the AP Poll, we’re nothing more than a distant third-place contender or a dark horse). I think most reasonable ACC followers would believe that with BC’s very manageable schedule, potentially-improved quarterback play, and a dominant Montel Harris, the Eagles may wind up in Charlotte this December.
It couldn’t possibly be further away from this game, however. To get the season started right, BC has to take care of business on the easiest Saturday of the schedule (I ranked it 12th of 12 in difficulty earlier this month). Tomorrow, a look at the offenses.
