The man who announced on his first day of work in 1951 a roster with Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, and Mickey Mantle with Casey Stengel as manager has retired. Bob Sheppard, LONG time public address voice of Yankee Stadium will be moving on to other endeavors at age 98. I wish him nothing but the best.
All I have to say is this as a warning to the people in charge of hiring his replacement: I will be extremely pissed off if you select some campy minor-league dude who feels he needs to constantly elevate his voice to get the crowd excited. That's not the way it works in the Bronx. The new guy doesn't have to be the same, but he should at least have a similar tone.
