I've been scanning some message boards today and I've been seeing a lot of chatter about Davidson's loss last night. It seems there are a lot of people arguing that the Wildcats should/will get in for one of two reasons: (1) they have a good record or (2) the NCAA wants to see Stephen Curry in the dance again so they'll give them a bid regardless.
People, listen: if the Selection Committee gives Davidson a bid with 1 win against the RPI Top 100, an RPI of 72 and an SOS of 165 just so they can get ratings, it will make a complete mockery of the tournament. There are at least a dozen teams I would take before Davidson. Let me say again that their best win was against West Virginia and their second-best win was against NC State; in other words, they basically didn't beat anyone this year. They would lose in the first round anyway! Some people are going to justify giving a bid to a team essentially because of one player, even when their body of work suggests that they're not going to hang around very long?
I respect Davidson and Curry, but it's not happening this year, nor should it. The tournament will survive without them. I'm just shocked that I've come across this theme so many times since yesterday. Most people seem to be sane in regards to this issue, including most Davidson fans I've come across, but there are some that see ratings justifying at-large bids.
