We had one nice win and one bitter defeat tonight. As most people usually want the bad news first, we'll start there: BC's quest for a national title in something other than hockey or sailing came to an end tonight in North Carolina, as the women's soccer team lost in the national semifinals to Stanford, 2-0. This was more or less a case of history repeating itself, as Stanford beat BC by two goals last season in the Elite Eight. Still a great season for the ladies, and they are to be commended for another deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
Now on to the good news. Boston College men's hockey went down Commonwealth Avenue this evening to play a school where it still most assuredly sucks to BU. The Eagles beat the Terriers 9-5 in a sometimes wild, sometimes ugly, heavily-officiated game at Agganis Arena. Getting in the box score with BC goals were Cam Atkinson (2), Brian Gibbons, Philip Samuelsson, Paul Carey, Jimmy Hayes, Chris Krieder, Bill Arnold, and Barry Almeida. I love when just about everybody gets in on it, don't you?
Most of BU's scoring came late, with four goals in the third period, but the Eagles' lead was too big for BU to seriously close the gap. They will play again tomorrow night at the same time, and that will be covered in tomorrow morning's article.
