...a torn labrum. The cyst is a minor issue. (Update: a doctor on WEPN 1050AM apparently just said that the torn labrum is better than having the cyst and that a 10-week absence is accurate...I don't know why that is, but I'll take his word for it -- this same gentleman supposedly insists that steroids have nothing to do with it, which makes sense)
Before anyone goes on about karmic justice or anything like that, I'm just going to think about the baseball implications, which are that the Yankee offense took two steps backwards. Much like last year, they could have problems scoring runs while he's out. Hell, they struggled to score runs even with A-Rod: their output of 789 runs in 2008 was way down from their output of 968 in 2007 and 930 in 2006. It was also the fewest runs they had scored in a full year since 1992.
Can we expect more of the same underachievement from the Yankee bats? Possibly. A lot of guys will have to pick up the load.
Update 2: The Yankees have elected not to go for surgery for A-Rod; rehab instead. Are they going to let him play through it? Wow, what the hell is going on? This has been one bizarre day of non-steroid A-Rod news.
