The last time the New York Yankees had sole possession of first place in the American League East was October 1, 2006. That's right: for the entire 2007 and 2008 seasons, they did not have it all to themselves even once.
I'm pretty sure they want that to change, but does their hot spring necessarily mean anything? In their last few years before this, they've been lethargic in Grapefruit League play, a few games above or below .500 and certainly nothing spectacular. From there, they would start relatively cold (some seasons colder than others). There is not necessarily a correlation between Yankee spring records and hot starts, but it's better to play well and have momentum going into the regular season than sucking and having to play catch-up.
