2009 NCAA Tournament (Day 2) Open Post

More recent updates closer to the top

9:02pm ET: It's almost baseball season. BC is sucking wind.

7:12pm ET:
Bill Raftery is delightfully insane. He's got to be one of my favorite basketball commentators.

7:03pm ET:
CBS had another chance to pick against us and didn't. I guess I should be pleased.

5:19pm ET:
Here's one I didn't really figure: Dayton is going to beat West Virginia, one of my Elite 8 teams. Not that I particularly care about what happens to my bracket, but here's another upset for you. It seems I underestimated the Flyers after fading late in the year.

5:12pm ET:
It seems highly likely that Pitt will win the game now, but I have no idea how any of their fans can be proud of their performance today. They damn near got beat by a 16 seed and sleepwalked through just about the entire game. If DeJuan Blair had an off-day today, they would have been the first 1-seed to lose in Round 1.

5:04pm ET:
ETSU still within 4 (likely to be 5) at the under 4-minute TV timeout. I tell ya, win or lose, the Bucs have played one hell of a game and they are to be commended for their effort, intensity, and just all-around guts. I have seen little of those three elements from Pittsburgh today. This is the team that totally out-physicalled UConn twice?

4:55pm ET:
I have concluded that Pitt is no threat at all for a national title if this is the way they're going to play.

4:43pm ET:
Not a great day for the Big East so far: they're getting some wins, but every single team that's played so far has looked like crap. And I don't have to tell you what would happen if Pitt loses.

4:35pm ET:
ETSU's shots are doing everything but going in the hoop. It's inexplicable how sloppy this game is.

4:27pm ET:
Cornell has fizzled out and at least ETSU is staying in touching range of Pitt. The Panthers still look dreadful and the Buccaneers are playing with such effort that you can't help but root for them (unless you have Pitt in your bracket or are a fan).

3:44pm ET:
Pittsburgh looks terrible. Now we have a 14 and and 11 leading their games with a 16 close. I'm getting what I want it appears.

3:12pm ET:
It's probably a hopeless cause, but I find myself rooting for East Tennessee State. Is that so wrong?

2:40pm ET:
I said I wanted someone to win on a buzzer beater, not hit a buzzer beater but still lose by 1.

2:35pm ET:
Someone please win on a buzzer beater. Please.

2:30pm ET:
NDSU played admirably, but they just didn't have enough. I have no regrets in picking them because they clearly hung around and showed they could play with a big name.

2:19pm ET:
Syracuse only managed 59 points against Stephen F. Austin. They're lucky they weren't playing anyone better.

2:14pm ET:
I have to say, I'm not that impressed with the tournament so far this year. There have been no upsets of note and everyone knows it's boring when it all goes to plan. I don't care about brackets; I'd kill to see a 16 seed win today.

1:45pm ET:
Uh-oh, Utah State has streaked their way right back into the game. Quite low-scoring and Marquette is suddenly in trouble.

1:08pm ET:
2 good games and 2 not so good games in the first wave. Tennessee/Oklahoma State and NDSU/Kansas are the good ones, while SFA and Utah State are getting creamed by Syracuse and Marquette, respectively. I think the Big East may very well get all 7 of its teams into the 2nd round.

12:47pm ET:
NDSU/Kansas is a shootout. Both these teams look pretty good. Lots of offense.

12:41pm ET:
The SFA/Cuse game is getting ugly. The Lumberjacks can't make a bucket to save their lives. 8% from the floor in the first 10 minutes of the game, which is St. John's-Big-East-Tournament-esque. I just hope for their sake that they score more than 10 points.

12:36pm ET:
Over now to the NDSU/Kansas game. I have this upset because I feel strongly that the Bison will play well. Of course, that was probably their kiss of death.

12:28pm ET:
SFA is getting the ball into the low post, but they're not finishing. This game should be closer than it is. Syracuse isn't playing outstandingly but they're making shots.

12:16pm ET:
Stephen F. Austin has a starting player at all of 5-foot-3. If you ever feel insecure about your height, think about what this guy is accomplishing.

12:12pm ET:
Good news: CBS did not pick against BC when they had a chance to name their pre-game show upsets. I'd have probably put the TV on mute right there if they had.
